Welcome to the gigateway news update. You are receiving this as an AGI member or having subscribed through the gigateway website.

Gigateway quality checking starts in earnest

Following the publication of the UK GEMINI guidelines, the gigateway team has now begun the significant task of checking the current metadata records against the quality standard.  The team will also be taking the opportunity to convert the existing records to the UK GEMINI standard.

The guidelines advise checking all your metadata records at least yearly.  Many of the current records date back to before 2004, so you may be contacted to confirm that your metadata is still up to date.

We are committed to improving the quality of existing gigateway records as part of this year’s operating plan.   We hope that data providers will share our desire to see up-to-date, comprehensive metadata records on the service and will help us in achieving this aim.

NIMSA Update - gigateway still on track

The National Interest Mapping Services Agreement (“NIMSA”) funds mapping services which are in the national interest, but would not otherwise be provided by the market as they are not economically viable. This includes the gigateway service.

NIMSA was established in 1999 as a 7-year agreement between the Department for Communities and Local Government (“DCLG”) and Ordnance Survey (“OS”). As the agreement is due to expire, DCLG has considered the future of national interest funding.

It has been announced that the current NIMSA arrangement with Ordnance Survey will be terminated with effect from December 31st 2006, however DCLG will continue until further notice to support the operation of a national geospatial metadata service (currently known as gigateway).

We hope this will assure data providers that the government is committed to the funding of a national metadata service.

e-GMS version 3.1 released

The UK e-Government Metadata Standard (e-GMS) version 3.1 has been published and is available on the GovTalk site. The Integrated Public Sector Vocabulary (IPSV) is now the mandated encoding scheme for the Subject element.

Additional changes include:

  • Further guidance has been added to the Standard to illustrate the correct expression of elements, refinements and encoding scheme names
  • Examples and notes have been updated
  • Mapping to the UK GEMINI standard has been included.
