Welcome to the gigateway news update. You are receiving this as an AGI member or having subscribed through the gigateway website.
The 'Gigateway 2005-2006: A Year in Review' document has just been published on the gigateway website. This looks back at a year of consolidation, concentrating on key datasets and data quality. Other highlights from the last year include the release of MetaGenie 2, MetaGenie Showbox and the UK GEMINI schema. The operating plan for this year includes no new development work, but we will ensure that gigateway remains on-line and provide support for users and data providers. We will continue to concentrate on improved metadata quality and upgrading current records to the UK GEMINI standard. New UK GEMINI Guidelines A series of documents has just been published to provide additional guidance to people using the UK-GEMINI standard. They have been published on the Gigateway website in the Standards Section. The Guidelines are aimed at data managers and creators of metadata, providers of metadata services and general data users. They have been produced in association with the department of Communities and Local Government (DCLG) Part 1 covers the basics of metadata and provides an introduction to the other two parts. It includes a glossary of terms and set of references. Part 2 provides a set of detailed guidelines for compiling UK GEMINI metadata elements. This is designed to complement the standard document itself giving more examples and detailed guidance on completing each metadata element. Part 3 deals with metadata quality and covers quality evaluation and quality management of metadata including guidance on establishing acceptable quality levels. This will be used by the gigateway team this year to assess and improve the quality of metadata records. We hope these guidelines will help users who are having problems producing UK GEMINI compliant metadata. We intend to incorporate them into the MetaGenie tool in due course. |
