News Update
April 2006

Welcome to the gigateway news update. You are receiving this as an AGI member or having subscribed through the gigateway website.

MetaGenie 2 Full Release

The new version of MetaGenie v2.0, our metadata editing tool, is now is now freely available to download and use from the gigateway website. This new version of the software is fully compliant with the UK GEMINI standard, and will enable metadata providers to convert their existing NGDF data.

Version 2 also includes important usability improvements including:

• Use of tab keys to move between form fields for faster data entry
• More control over folders allowing easier housekeeping
• Easier to integrate into scripts for automatic metadata generation.
• Ability to import data in different XML formats (using user-prepared XSLT)
• Ability to customize HTML output (using user-prepared style sheet)

There have already been more than 60 downloads of the beta version of the tool which has been available since March. Data created with this beta version will, of course, load seamlessly into the new version, and we advise everyone to upgrade as soon as possible.

Gemini Schema now published

The UK GEMINI XML schema developed by AGI and Snowflake software is now published on the gigateway website.
The URL is http://www.gigateway.org.uk/xsd/gemini/gemini/geminiSchema.xsd. This differs slightly from the early access version supplied to system suppliers and other interested parties. MetaGenie v2 produces data conformant to this schema.

UK GEMINI update

The UK GEMINI working group had its first meeting on 23 March. The terms of reference of the group state that its mission is “To take responsibility for the maintenance of the UK GEMINI discovery metadata standard and to develop further versions as required”. Robert Turner of gigateway sits on the group and would be pleased to have any feedback from users of UK-GEMINI. This would be best emailed to robert.turner@agi.org.uk.

We will keep you posted with the work of this group in future gigateway news updates.
