Central Government node is refreshed

Towards the end of last year the Central Government (IGGI) node on gigateway was completely refreshed. This was the first visible result of a work programme to revise the data descriptions on the IGGI node. Much of the metadata on the node was outdated and a lot of the information was incorrect. This led to a lowering of confidence in the gigateway service as a whole. The previous 2244 datasets from 131 data providers have been replaced with datasets from 7 data providers, as follows:- Department of Health, Department of Trade and Industry, English Heritage, Office of Fair Trading, English Nature, Welsh Assembly Government and The Coal Authority.

The number of data providers and metadata records on the IGGI node is expected to increase following our current efforts to gain all the key national datasets for Great Britain.

We will be organising two important meetings in the next few weeks which will both be held at the AGI office in London.

The first one is the 'Metadata Portal Meeting' which will take place on 20th January. The aim of this meeting is to bring together representatives from the various metadata portals (including EDINA, the British Geological Survey, DEFRA and the Office of Public Sector Information) to share ideas and experience as well as to decide on ways to complement and enhance the work of gigateway.

The second meeting, to be held on 7th February, is the 'Data Providers Meeting' which is aimed at the key dataset providers, i.e. those organisations that hold core national datasets and documents, etc. that could be of interest to the wider public in Great Britain.

If you are involved with any other UK metadata portal or if you believe your organisation holds a national dataset that should be included on gigateway then please contact the Information Services Team on 020 7253 5211 or info@gigateway.org.uk who look forward to hearing from you.
