New Information Services Officer |
With Louise Scofield moving into the wider AGI team as Membership and Information Manager, gigateway has a new Information Services Officer. Lee West joined the AGI last week and comes to the role with a background in GIS, having completed a BSc in Geography at Leicester University, and an MSc in GIS at Nottingham University. Since graduating Lee has worked in various GI roles within local government. |
| As part of his new role, Lee will be responsible for delivering the 2005-2006 Services Operating plan in agreement with the Ordnance Survey. This new plan, due to be published on gigateway imminently, will outline the necessary steps to ensure the service provides high quality, up to date metadata for the nation's key datasets, as an absolute minimum. |
| The whole AGI team wish Lee the very best in this new position. |
| Plans for a Northern Ireland node on gigateway |
The Mosaic Programme Office announced this month that it has selected GDC, in partnership with PricewaterhouseCoopers, to provide a pilot geographic infrastructure for its Mosaic Programme, the implementation of the Geographic Information Strategy for Northern Ireland. |
| Mosaic is an initiative being progressed by the Department of Culture, Arts and Leisure through its Agency, Ordnance Survey of Northern Ireland (OSNI) since 2002. The objective of Mosaic is to improve Government service delivery and service management through the use of geographic information. |
|
GDC will be responsible for a range of projects including: development of a gigateway node for Northern Ireland to identify key datasets; a Mosaic portal for geo-spatial educational content to assist in developing awareness of the benefits of GI; online repositories of key datasets, including environment/countryside data and land and property data for public access and to support decision making across department boundaries. |
| Gigateway's Information Services Team will be involved in the Mosaic launch, scheduled to take place in Belfast before the end of June. This will involve demonstrating the anticipated new Northern Ireland node, and providing metadata fundamentals training to those interested in learning more about standards and the use of MetaGenie. Please check the gigateway website for news on this. |
