Core national datasets are key in 2005/2006 |
The GIgateway Information Services Team is currently working with the Ordnance Survey, under NISMA contract, to etsablish a strong Services Operating Plan for the coming financial year. Once finalised, this plan will be made available online but we can already confirm that the main focus for the next 12 months will be to ensure metadata for the nation's core geographic datasets are available and up to date. |
| We will also be establishing a 'trust mark' that will confirm each record's currency and quality. Non-core metadata records will be seen as a welcome addition to this essential national information and will help make GIgateway an invaluable service. |
| Changes to the Data Locator |
The more observant of you may have noticed some modifications to the Data locator search interface. The principal change has been to expand the free text search to allow more complex queries, using "AND" "OR" and "NOT" operators. This enables you to tailor your search more specifically to your requirements. In addition, the navigation has been improved to allow you to return directly to the search results page when browsing through metadata records. |

| IGGI Data Management and Standards Workshop |
Robert Turner of the AGI's Information Services Team recently spoke at a Data Management and Standards Workshop organised by the Intra-Governmental Group on Geographic Information (IGGI). It was pleasing to hear a number of speakers stressing the importance of good metadata for geographic information, and also advocating the use of GIgateway as an aid to data sharing.
