The case for a national metadata portal - report now published

An independent study, recently co-commissioned by the AGI and Ordnance Survey to review the sustainability of a UK metadata service for geographically related information, has now been published and is available online. The study, conducted by an independent consultant, does not form a critique of GIgateway but rather looks at the case from first principles and in the abstract. The study represents a very thorough investigation of what is meant by a metadata service (geographic and non-geographic) and its role in the information society, the development of such a service within an international context, as well as building the case for a national metadata service in the UK. Integral to this is an examination of who users of such a service would be and what they would require from it, who metadata depositors are likely to be and why they should want to be part of the service, business and management models and how success can be achieved and measured.
