The case for a national metadata portal
An independent study was recently co-commissioned by the AGI and Ordnance Survey to review the sustainability of a UK metadata service for geographically related information. The study was conducted by an independent consultant. Its findings, due for imminent publication, do not form a critique of the current service, GIgateway, but rather look at the case from first principles and in the abstract. The study represents a very thorough investigation of what is meant by a metadata service (geographic and non-geographic) and its role in the information society, the development of such a service within an international context, as well as building the case for a national metadata service in the UK. Integral to this is an examination of who users of such a service would be and what they would require from it, who metadata depositors are likely to be and why they should want to be part of the service, business and management models and how success can be achieved and measured.

GVAC UK Higher Education Node live on the Data Locator
You may have noticed a new addition to the Data Locator recently. An additional node providing information about geospatial datasets is now available to users, who will be able to source information from academic, commercial and public sector data providers, particularly applicable to the UK tertiary education sector and beyond. This new node is a great asset to the GIgateway service and is a step in the right direction to meeting our aim of providing metadata for the whole of Great Britain.
If you have metadata that could be published via any existing directory, or you are interesting in setting up and hosting your own company or regional node, then please get in touch with Robert who will be happy to offer advice and assistance.
