| GIgateway™ Newsletter - October 2004 |
Gearing up for AGI2004, 12th-14th October |
| Next week sees GIgateway exhibiting at AGI2004, the first GIS exhibition to be truly integrated with the AGI annual conference. The Information Services Team will therefore be out of the office all week, but you can come and visit us on stand 39, Chelsea Village Exhibition Hall! Further details can be found on the AGI2004 website. Entry to the exhibition is free of charge and you can register on the door. |
| Thank you to those who registered to attend our Metadata Fundamentals workshop during the conference. The limited spaces were quickly filled and our apologies go to those we had to turn away. But don't worry; we will be advertising our second wave of free training sessions very soon so there will be another opportunity to hone your metadata creation skills! |
| UK GEMINI to be launched, 12th October! |
The UK GEMINI (UK GEospatial Metadata INteroperability Initiative) Profile will be launched on Tuesday 12th October, at the official opening of AGI2004. All are welcome to come along to the IGGI stand at 16:30 (see the AGI2004 website for information on how to get to the exhibition). The profile is the result of a year-long collaboration between the Association for Geographic Information (AGI) and the Cabinet Office e-Government Unit, with additional representation from national and local government, and the academic community. |
Adherence to the UK GEMINI profile, which will replace the GIgateway Discovery Metadata Specifications (the NGDF Standard) as the UK’s national geospatial metadata profile, allows for the creation of discovery metadata with both ISO 19115 (Geographic Information – Metadata) and the national e-Government Metadata Standard (eGMS). Adopting UK GEMINI will also simplify the process of publishing metadata via GIgateway's Data Locator. |
So why should organisations adopt UK GEMINI as an integral part of their corporate data management? As well as specifically assisting central and local government departments meet targets on electronic delivery and interoperability, all organisations involved in creating and managing geographic datasets will benefit from developing a metadata catalogue which maps to a common international standard. Users can be assured that the UK GEMINI profile has been through a rigorous process of user consultation and that GIgateway will be adopting the new profile and modifying its MetaGenie software ASAP to keep pace with this development. |
| The UK GEMINI profile will be freely available from next week on both the GIgateway website (at http://www.gigateway.org.uk/metadata/standards.html) and govTalk. |

| A Fresh Look for the GIgateway Website |
| From Monday next week GIgateway will be sporting a new and improved look. Not only will the website be easier on the eye, but you'll be able to find your way around it much more easily, allowing you to find what you need quickly and efficiently. We've also added a new dimension to the service and have bought the content of another bang up to date (read on for more details...). But don't just take our word for it; log on next week and see the changes for yourself! As always, we can be found at www.gigateway.org.uk. |
| Brand New Data Directory, and up-to-date Area Search |
| To tie in with the launch of our revamped website and AGI2004, the UK's premier GIS event, GIgateway will be launching a brand new online Data Directory from next week. This will provide a free searchable database of organisations who supply geographic data, and/or data products and services in the UK. Users will be able to search this Directory by alphabetical listing, or by data type or services provided. |
| If your organisation is not already listed in the Directory and you feel it should be, please email Theresa who will see that you are included, if appropriate. There is no charge for this service and, if you decide to contribute your metadata to GIgateway's Data Locator as well, you will automatically be eligible for an expanded Data Directory entry including full colour logo exposure! |
| GIgateway's Area Search, which returns information contained within ONS's All Fields Postcode Directory, has been brought up-to-date. This is already live on the original GIgateway website, and will obviously be a feature of the new website from next week as well. This is a welcome addition and our thanks go to ONS for providing this information to the service. |
