MetaGenie Goes Live! |
|
| On 24 February
MetaGenie, the UK metadata creation tool, became available for download
via the GIgateway® website. More than 60 organisations have already
downloaded and implemented the application. Look for these records soon
on the GIgateway® Data Locator service.
This innovative piece of software enables you to easily create geographic metadata compliant with the GIgateway® Discovery Metadata Specifications - the standard created and delivered by the UK’s National Geospatial Data Framework (formerly the NGDF Standard). The new tool comes with a comprehensive User Guide and useful ‘Help’ windows to steer you effortlessly through the creation of a metadata record. The only ‘cost’ involved in implementing MetaGenie within your organisation, is the ‘cost’ of a commitment to publish your metadata records via GIgateway®. Information sharing is what MetaGenie and GIgateway® is all about. For more information on MetaGenie and to download your copy, please click here. | MetaGenie Monthly Tip! |
This is the first in a series of monthly hints and tips aimed at MetaGenie users; these will cover aspects of the tool not covered directly in the user guide. This month we answer the question - Is there is an easy way to create a series of records with very similar details (for example identical data supplier) without re-typing the information for every record? The easy way to do this is to save a template record containing just supplier information. For each new record, open the template, add all the additional information, and use the 'save as…' function to create a new record. If anyone has their own hints and tips that they would like to share with other MetaGenie users then please send an email to info@gigateway.org.uk. |

| Metadata Fundamentals - coming to a town near you soon! |
The GeoInformation Group submitted the successful proposal for a UK wide program of education in the value and creation of metadata, on behalf of GIgateway®. Their proposal defines a national training programme to promote awareness and encourage good practice in the collection of metadata. Comprised of half day seminars aimed at all organisations that are involved in the creation and use of geographic information, the programme will include the specifics of standards based metadata and a tutorial on the use of MetaGenie. Additionally there will be lunch time seminars, aimed at senior managers, which will discuss the notion of metadata and why it is essential within the geospatial world. Even as we speak, venues are being booked and arrangements are being made for these seminars. The first will be delivered during May. Look out for more information very soon. To register your interest in this training initiative, please email Louise. |
| 2nd and Final GEMINI Consultation |
| Last month we brought you the latest news on the GEMINI (Geo-spatial Metadata Interoperability Initiative) proposal for a UK profile of ISO 19115/19139. Following the GEMINI stakeholders group meeting in February, a new profile has been drafted and a period of field testing records which have been created according to this revised draft is currently underway. The results of these tests and the new profile will be available for public comment on 1 April. Please ensure that you provide comments as this second consultation will be definitive and will end on 30 April. You will find the new draft document on GIgateway® from April 1st at the following location: http://www.gigateway.org.uk/metadata/metadataspecs.html |
| Goodbye...and Hello! |
| The Information
Services Team has said goodbye to Romina Ercolanoni, the AGI's Web and Information
Officer, who is expanding her horizons by travelling to some exotic places.
Romina was involved in the re-development of the GIgateway® website
(formerly the askGIraffe website) and the total reconstruction of the AGI
website. With fondness, we wished Romina all the best and requested that
she not be a stranger if she ever visits London.
On
13 April, the team will welcome Theresa Stabb, our new Information Services
Assistant. Working part time with us, Theresa will be responsible for
assisting in the re-development of GIgateway®’s Data Directory
and in the enormous task of editing the many currently invalid metadata
records. A student at Birkbeck College, UCL, Theresa is pursuing a Masters
degree in Philosophy. |
