GEMINI (Geo-spatial Metadata Interoperability Initiative)
UK GEMINI (Geo-spatial Metadata Interoperability Initiative)
The UK GEMINI profile
is the result of a year-long collaboration between the Association
for Geographic Information (AGI) and the Cabinet
Office e-Government Unit, with additional representation
from national and local government, and the academic community.
The standard document is supplemented by a set of guideline
documents giving additional advice and best practice.
NOTE: UK GEMINI v 1.0 is the currently used version of the standard. Version 2 will be compatible with the INSPIRE Implementing Rules (IR) for Metadata.
A draft of this, v 2.1, has been produced, compatible with v 2 of the INSPIRE IR. However this version is not final and will be subject to further change. A final draft of UK GEMINI v 2 will be produced when the INSPIRE IR are finalised, expected to be in May 2008

ISO 19115/19139
The
new international standard ISO 19115/19139 Geographic
Information: Metadata supercedes the Gigateway/NGDF
Discovery Metadata Specification, via the UK national profile
- UK GEMINI. Implementation is scheduled for 2006 against
current estimations but this is dependent on release of ISO
19139, the XML schema implementation for
19115. ISO 19115, the content part of the standard, has already
been published and is available, at a discounted rate, from
the AGI. Please contact Susan

Gigateway Discovery Metadata Specification (Formerly the NGDF Standard)
The
standard formulated by the now moribund National Geospatial
Data Framework (NGDF) was renamed the Gigateway Discovery
Metadata Specifications in
2002 . It is essentially the Dublin Core Metadata Standard with an extension
for handling spatial coordinates. This specification has now been superceded
by the UK GEMINI profile and should not be used for new metadata sets.
e-GMS (e-Government Metadata Standard)
The e-Government Metadata Standard lays down the elements, refinements and encoding schemes to be used by government officers when creating metadata for their information resources or when designing search systems for information systems. The e-GMS forms part of the e-GIF.
The e-GMS is required to ensure maximum consistency of metadata across public sector organisations. View the e-GMS here.
