What is the review?
It is a systematic look at metadata records on Gigateway
to ascertain to what level they comply with current metadata
standards.
The review is initially focusing upon the Gigateway catalogue
node, and may extend to other nodes as the project allows.

Aims
To measure performance against targets outlined in the Gigateway
Services Operating Plan 2006-2007.
The key performance indicators are:
1. Percentage of existing datasets achieving level 1 compliance
(using UK GEMINI Quality guidelines)= 50%
2. Percentage of existing datasets achieving level 2 compliance
(using UK GEMINI Quality guidelines)= 20%

Progress
The
gigateway team has
undertaken a quality review of approximately 40% of the metadata
of the Gigateway catalogue node. Every
organisation that contributes to the node has had at least
5 records checked in detail (or all of them if they have
less than 5 records).
This provides a good indication of the overall quality of
the existing metadata.
The reviewed records have been quality assessed
in relation to the UK's national geospatial metadata standard, "UK
GEMINI Standard Version 1.0, 2004-10-12". The recent "Metadata
Guidelines for Geospatial Datasets in the UK" were used
as a detailed guide, particularly "Part 3 Metadata Quality".
See the Metadata Guidelines documents here – http://www.gigateway.org.uk/metadata/default.html.
The next step is for each organisation to review all of
their gigateway records and update them in the context of
the standard and guidelines.

There are a small number of fields (elements) in the metadata
that are generally causing records to non-conform. The Gigateway
team have documented in detail these learnings that will
be used:
- in feedback to organisations;
- to contribute to any future MetaGenie development;
- and to contribute to future versions of the UK GEMINI standard.

Your involvement
Each organisation’s detailed individual
feedback is or will shortly be provided to them, along with
a guide for
reviewing and updating their own records.
As the Metadata Creators and owners, your assistance and
support are vital to ensure the quality of gigateway continues
to improve and remain a useful service to the GI and wider
communities.
There are 2 options for the review/update of the records:
Option 1: Using MetaGenie online
Option 2: Using a bulk update from your own database

Benefits
Once you have updated the metadata on Gigateway, why not
obtain some business benefit for your organisation, and
link to these records from your website, just as the South
Downs Joint Committee has done?
