Figure 2: One issue we have to live with is that the core spatial units do not nest together exactly. This is a problem when data collected, for example, by postcode needs to be mapped onto wards as illustrated here. Figure 4: Changing boundaries are a fact of life for much of the UK, greatly complicating any work comparing changes over time because the base is not fixed. Comparisons of data which span across a date when changes have been made are prone to error if the datasets are compiled carelessly, as shown here in fig. 4.
   
Figure 3: The various departments and agencies which currently hold data about the same region reference that region using different codes. The example given here is Richmond upon Thames. Lack of standardisation on area codes is one of the greatest problems faced when trying to combine datasets from different organisations. Figures 5: When regions change their name or are restructured, it becomes difficult to assemble and analyse a comprehensive historical data set for that region.
