The
UK Standard Geographic Base (UKSGB) aims to provide access to commonly used
geographical units in the UK. The geographical base units currently included
in the UKSGB and available via the Data Directory are:
Addresses
Streets
Postcodes
Administrative/Voting Boundaries
Property Parcels
Census Geography
These administrative and postal geographies are constructed from a separate
hierarchy of areas, the units of which 'nest' together. The division of
the UK is based around standardised, fundamental building blocks, or CORE
SPATIAL UNITS. This is the most important aspect of the UKSGB.
These datasets are available from a range of sources but what makes the
UKSGB and the Data Directory important is the emphasis they place on standards.
For operational reasons, postcodes sometimes change and ward boundaries
are revised periodically for electoral purposes. As a result, data often
doesn’t match up with the core spatial units.

Local Authority districts, parliamentary constituencies and other geographies.
