Gigateway
is a web service aimed at increasing awareness of and access
to geographic information in the UK. Funded by the Government
through the National Interest Mapping Services Agreement
(NIMSA), gigateway is a not-for-profit organisation set
up specifically
to promote metadata best practice and information sharing.
To learn more about the work that we do, please read our most recent 'Year in Review' report:
The Future
AGI commissioned Atkins Limited to carry out an investigation
into future technology for a UK geospatial metadata service,
with a view to how a long-term replacement for gigateway
might operate. The Atkins report covers:
- The context and current technology;
- The need for new technology;
- The INSPIRE Directive and its relevance to a future UK
metadata service;
- Proposed logical architecture for the future metadata
service;
- The impacts of the future service on node providers;
- Issues that are not yet resolved.

Who we
are
Gigateway is run by the Association for
Geographic Information (AGI) and is located at the AGI's offices in Old
Street, London.
Gigateway
was formerly supported by a voluntary Advisory Group who
met quarterly to advise and support the Information Services
Team and
the service. This Advisory Group was made up of individuals
who have significant roles within the commercial, public
and academic GI communities.
